As I have mentioned on my blog before, spring takes its own sweet time to show its face on the island of Newfoundland. The arrival is gradual, just as it is on most northern coastlines, with cold temperatures accompanied by the odd snowfall or sleet storm.

I love the anticipation of warmer days ahead. And there are still some lovely moments, particularly when the wind is light, the water is calm, and the sun begins to set. These photos were taken on the peaceful evening of April 2nd, and since then most of the snow and ice has disappeared.

Another reason I love spring here on Perry’s Point: the pleasure to witness the renewal of nature by observing our seabirds. Two weeks ago, it started—the sudden appearance of seagulls and other salt water birds pairing off to mate. Everyday, we now see them huddled—and even cuddled!—together on rocks and small islets off the point, or gliding through the water side by side: herring gulls, saddlebacks, black ducks, and pintails.

Seagulls squeal a spring duet
swim in pairs around ice and rock
glide as swans in graceful tandem
hush broken by caw and squawk *

Jennifer, your photos are so beautiful! Living down here where temps might raise to 90 later this week, it’s shock to realize that y’all up north are still cold … lol. A few days ago, my brother-in-law, who lives in central New York state, said they’ve been having periods of frost. One morning it was 28 degrees when he got up. Brrrrr! 😉

I’m glad you enjoyed the photos, Marie! The projected temps for next week are up so that makes me happy. I used to envy those living in hotter climes but not so much since global warming. Our summers have gotten warmer on the point since we moved here 15 years ago. ☀️🙂

Your land is so stark and beautiful! Our gulls are back in northern MN. Just heard my first robin last week. There’s hope!

Hi Marie. Are your gulls pairing off like ours are? My friend and neighbour saw some robins in her garden but we haven’t seen any quite yet.
Stark—that’s the word. I think the starkness lends a cool dimension to the peacefulness here. 💕

Alas, I can’t answer your questions about the gulls pairing off. I live a few miles away from the lake in Duluth, so can’t easily observe them. They just fly over my house. But I would assume that they are, since this is the season. Keep enjoying your starkness!

Beautiful pictures.
We know your feeling right now as we lived several winters and springs in the Arctic.

The ducks and the icebergs. What a picture!

Hi Jacqui. They are young seagulls, actually. And those chunks of ice broke off from icebergs, which we call “bergy bits” around here. 😊

This is what I love about blogs, Jennifer. Thank you for taking the time to explain both of those.

Hi Lois, thanks. When the wind isn’t blowing hell out of root! Not for the faint of heart at those times. But yes, on days and evenings like this, it’s almost magical.
