Baby Love

In the midst of the pandemic as well as my deep despair over everything that is going on in the world right now, comes a welcome respite of joy and gratitude.

My only sister and her husband became grandparents last night, to a perfect little girl who was longed for and whose mom went nine days overdue before finally going into labour late yesterday morning. I am brimming with happiness for them all.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, my nephew was only permitted to stay in the hospital during labour and delivery, so like my sister and her husband and her other grandparents, he now has to wait until mother and baby are discharged to be with them.

A side note: when this same nephew was a baby and my firstborn was a young girl, she absolutely adored him. How do I know? Back then, she had a locket. She kept a pic of him in that locket along with a pic of herself. I smile whenever I think of it.

I can’t help but recall how thrilled I was when I became a grandmother fourteen years ago, to a dear little bundle who felt like a gift from heaven for all of us. And now my memories take me back to the day my own daughter was born.
I became a mom when I was barely a woman myself. So young I was, a child having a child. It didn’t take long, though, for me to make my baby a priority and to fall in love in a way I never had before.

Eight years ago, I wrote a short poem about it.

Baby Love

Remembering that day in June
when you were small and pink and new
your needs so urgent, your helplessness
eclipsing all I’d planned to do

Your eyes, the bluest I’ve ever seen
gazed into mine, I drank you in
strawberry mark on your behind
that perfect dimple in your chin

The tiny o your lips would make
when, nursing done, you fell asleep
that newborn smell, the lightest heft—
who knew that love could feel so deep?

  6. Getting a bit teary-eyed here. My first born was born on June 10 and oh how I relate to your beautiful poem. My second born was born on June 4 – today’s date – and he’s now 39. I must have been a child having a child, too, huh? 🙂 But seriously. the love we feel for our babies – stronger than the strongest glue on Earth. Many congrats to your nephew, his wife, your sister and husband and entire family. It is truly a “blessed event.”

    1. I agree, there is nothing stronger than our love for our children. Pam, I must confess I was anxious about the pregnancy because the new parents had tried for quite a while to start a family, and then with the pandemic hitting the scene — well, I’m sure you would have been concerned too. But for the most part, everything turned out great and the little girl is a doll.
      We must have had our babies around the same time because my girl will be 41 on June 14 and my boy was 38 in January. Thank you for your kind words and the congrats! 😍❤️

  8. Hi Jennifer – I’m not sure if my earlier comment went through, so I’m commenting again to let you know that I thought this was a lovely post. Congratulations on a new baby in your family – it’s such a wonderful thing. I really enjoyed your poem, too, because it reminded me of my own babies. Watching them nurse with their little mouths was such a joy.

    1. Thank you, Barbara. I’m glad you liked the poem and the post. Bringing a new life into the world is such a special time. Like you, I’m reminded of my own children (as well as my grandchildren) when they were newborns. One day I hope you will become a grandma too!

  12. What joyful news! Congratulations – celebrating with you on my side of the world. The first thought that popped into my mind was from Carl Sandburg: “A baby is God’s opinion that the world should go on.” We may live in uncertainty, but one thing I know is that love will continue to bring us together. Hugs!

      1. When my dad died, 13 years ago, my oldest granddaughter had a baby on the day of his funeral. Although we were sad that he was gone, the new baby softened the blow for all of us, especially mom. We also knew he would have liked that. We incorporated the “Life goes on” idea in the ceremony.
