On the 2nd of August, we had a thunder and lightning storm that lasted for seven hours, the longest one we’ve witnessed since we moved to Perry’s Point (nearly) five years ago. There was torrential rain off and on throughout, but these pics were taken during the dry lightning act of the show.
This time, I can’t take credit for the photography. My daughter Denise and her husband Dave captured parts of the electrical event on their cellphones during their visit with us. I had no idea smartphones could take such great pictures!
Notice, in most of them, the phenomenon of shelf clouds with the bonus of the setting sun in the shrouded background.
Tomorrow we have a high Humidex warning with values approaching mid-thirties.
More unsettled weather may be coming.
Eek! Could another thunderstorm be on its way?
Awesome pics!

Thanks. As I said, the kids get the credit!

Jennifer those captures are stunning, the colours are amazing. Im not a big fan of being outside in a thunderstorm. Too many limb dropping trees near us.

Yes, that would be a great reason to stay inside! Not a problem here on Perry’s Point. 🙂

Ha ha, good to know I’m not the only one who finds them amazing.

Jennifer, I’m awed again by the natural beauty surrounding your home. These lightening shots are spectacular. I have to confess I hide out in my house when lightening shows up. 🙂

Last night I walked our usual route—during a thunder and lightening storm. There’s a first time for everything, and I was scared to death. But I got some moody sky pictures. 🙂 Worth the moments of terror. I missed getting lightning shots though.

Good for you, Wendy, stepping outside your comfort zone. Sometimes there is no other way for a photographer. 🙂

What gorgeous pictures. One reason I upgraded my phone was for the better camera. Since my phone’s always with me, it’s become my default camera. Your pictures convince me I made a good decision.

Jacqui, I think you did make the right decision. Nowadays, almost anyone can be a photographer, thanks to the new smartphones!

Cauldron, exactly the right word for this tempest! We’ve had a strange summer so far with other types of weather, including huge hailstones in one area. We are at the mercy of Mother Nature sometimes, aren’t we?

Wow, these are fabulous photos. Mobile devices have such good cameras these days! I especially like the last one where the hut is in full view. A great picture for a poetry prompt! 😊

I couldn’t believe the quality either. And yes, definitely a terrific poetry prompt. Have at it, Christine! 😉

I have never been able to capture lightening. Beautiful (but scary!) shots. Be careful, Jennifer.

Thanks, Lois. I tried with my own camera as well, but all I got was a tiny chain of lightning up in the corner!

I love the rains, so can visualise the thrill of nature’s fireworks in those lightning streaks in the pics. The the south west and north east monsoon rains in India would be a nature lover’s delight…best wishes, jennifer..

Thanks, Raj. The shelf clouds alone were a thrill. They reminded me of a hovering UFO. 🙂

Wow, that’s quite the storm. Bet there were some nervous pets during it. Poor things.

Our cats were not all that impressed. Nico, though, our visiting golden doodle, seemed to be interested in what all the hub-bub was about. He stuck close to us, looking in the same direction as if he was taking it all in! 🙂
