Winter’s Glaze

A Chilly Greeting?

A couple of weeks ago, we weathered yet another “lovely” ice storm. The freezing rain painted every surface with sleet, resulting in slippery walks, treacherous roads, and a thick coat of glittering rime on just about everything. Oh Joy!

A ghostly mist hangs in the air, glazing everything in a sheet of ice.

I hoped to capture some shots of sunshine on the glitter, but the forecast wasn’t cooperating. Not one to miss an opportunity, however, I headed outside to see what artistry I might find under the heavy grey overcast of gloom.

The fog begins to clear…

 …and the clouds lift a little, allowing a few thin milky rays to shine through.

All at once, everything glows with a sparkly sheen…

…and the “batty catters” take on a cold blue tint at the ocean’s edge.
A wide band of slobby ice meanders in the water near the coastline.

The opening sky colours our sea blue once again.

So far, we’ve enjoyed countless sunny days and not too much of the white stuff.
But that may be about to change; a winter storm alert is issued for the weekend.

    1. Thank you, and nice to hear from you again. 🙂 Yes, apparently, the other Atlantic provinces have gotten walloped with snow, and the west coast of Newfoundland. The amount we have gotten pales in comparison. How is the weather in Italy this time of year?

      1. It’s always a pleasure reading you Jennifer! In central Italy it’s sunny, 11 degrees Celsius! We got some snow the very last days of December, but nothing comparable to what’s happening in Nova Scotia! We can’t wait for spring to come! 😉

    1. You’re welcome, Kath. There was barely a breeze that day, so it wasn’t too cold. I managed to take pics without gloves on. Today the sun is brilliantly beautiful and blinding on the snow, and more snow is on the way tonight. So very different from your world, hey?

  9. The photographs are STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL. Ice is so lovely and so deadly. I love that the sun came out, and no, I haven’t seen ice fog before. That is really creepy! Ice is usually what we get, but our winter this year has only been rain. No snow or ice at all. Lots of 70-degree days in Jan and Feb. It’s pretty crazy, but I’m not complaining.

  10. This has a very serene appearance, but I’m guessing movement within it is almost impossible: I mean, how do you stay upright? Or is it simpler just to lie down on your stomach and paddle around, like a seal? The photos are beautiful, BTW! Here in northern UK Winter has been kind so far – there are few dramas happening at the moment, and halfway through February we are already anticipating Spring , and warmer rain!

    1. Frederick, salt and sand are used in abundance when this happens, but I do love your paddling seal imagery! ha ha

    1. Oh, indeed! Here in Newfoundland, losing the power for a bit during these ice storms – and snowstorms – is not at all unusual. And the branches of big beautiful tress have fallen victim many times.

  15. Wow Jennifer, some stunning photos! And we think it’s cold here in the UK! We have no idea! 😄 I love the twig in its icy tomb; I love all of them! We have only had a little snow here so far this winter and even then our country makes such a fuss, roads not gritted enough, schools closed etc etc. it’s ridiculous. However, it is still too cold for me to venture out for too long; my MS doesn’t like the cold weather so I need to keep warm. I can hear the doves as I type though, so I know spring is somewhere not too far away. 😊

    1. Ah, doves! Yes, you are lucky to have spring arrive when it’s supposed to, not weeks, or even months overdue like it is often the case here. All the schools and such are closed here today due to a blizzard that will go into tomorrow.

    We’ve had quite a bit of snow in NE Ohio, though not to the degree those poor people in New England have had. I have family in New Hampshire, and I think they’re going a little stir crazy!
